An important part of making people aware of cancer includes showing them there’s hope when it comes to fighting it. In Panama City, Peoples Gas team members brought their own sweet touch to the concept – from cancer prevention tips to treatment options – with a bake sale for the department and customers alike.
Work Coordinator Coreatha Garner organized the event, on June 18, with inspiration from a team member’s daughter – a second grader who wanted to sell her homemade bracelets to raise money for a good cause.
That’s where the sweets came in, with cupcakes, banana nut bread and a whole spread of treats that generated $500 in donations.
It was a team effort all the way, Garner said.
“If team members didn’t bake, they bought,” she said. “Everyone here chipped in! We have a great group.”
The bake sale, which coincided with a safety meeting at Panama City Operations, included an appearance by a staff member from the American Cancer Society who offered helpful tips about preventing cancer, options for treatment and more.
Garner said the message hit home with team members.
“Cancer is affecting a lot of us right now,” she said. Garner’s mother and mother-in-law have both recently faced the disease. “It allows me to appreciate and respect cancer survivors even more.
“This event was a big success in helping people understand that cancer is real, ” Garner added, “and, maybe most importantly, that there are people who can help.”
