For Home Safety

April is Safe Digging Month. Remember to call 811 before you dig!

call 811It’s that time of year when Peoples Gas gives you a special reminder. Florida law says excavators MUST call 811 to get underground utility lines marked at a dig site prior to digging. This applies to everyone. Homeowners and professional excavators.

Winter is over and many homeowners are ready to start gardening and other home improvement projects on their property. Please be aware that every digging project – even small ones – requires making a call to 811 first. This helps to  ensure utility lines are marked.

Digging jobs can include planting trees and shrubs or installing a birdhouse or mailbox on a pole. Maybe you’re putting in new fencing or a swimming pool. You name it, if there’s digging involved, calling 811 applies!

No cold showers

You may wonder why marking utility lines is important. Well, no one likes to be without cable TV or electricity. And natural gas users could lose service to their kitchen or water heaters. But it isn’t just about inconvenience. Calling 811 before digging helps to avoid accidents during excavation that could result in serious injury.

Plan ahead to call 811

Make that phone call at least two to three days ahead of time. A Peoples Gas’ representative will mark your lines with yellow paint and flags. Utility companies have two full business days, not including the day the call was placed, to mark natural gas lines. If you’re digging on Saturday, call by Wednesday.

Remember: call, wait, dig. It’s simple, free and easy. Check out our website or sunshine811 for more details.
